Starting Your Breast Pumping Journey

Pumping and storage of breast milk is very helpful whether you're going to be away from your baby due to other commitments or you want your partner or assistant to help with feedings.

Hygiene is very important to consider whenever you're pumping. Before you start pumping, make sure your pump is clean and dry. Wash your hands with soap and water. If this is not available, you can use an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

The following are great pumping tips to consider!

When to start Pumping

If you're going to be away from your baby, it is advisable to start pumping a few weeks before hand. This will give you time to adjust to pumping and will give your baby time to get used to bottle feeding.

How often to Pump
Try to pump as often as your baby breast feeds. Try as much as possible to have a schedule and maintain consistency. This will assist you to keep making the amount of milk your baby needs.

How much to Pump

Pumping as often as your baby normally breastfeeds should be able to maintain a consistent milk flow. However, this amount is unique to each mother and baby!  If you're not able to pump as much milk as you would like in one session, you can increase the number of pumping sessions.
